A Tragic Day at the State Fair

We had such a wonderful time at the State Fair of Louisiana today! Here are some of the pictures from the day.

Right after getting off this ride, at around 11:40 am, tragedy struck the campgrounds. We were standing in line for another ride when the ride next to us was unloading. It was a ride kind of like the teacup ride - the platform spins and each individual car spins. As the ride operator was helping to unload children from one of the cars, one of the younger children went to the operators station and pressed the start button. There are children still out of the cars on the platform when everything starts moving and spinning. One child, a four year old named Sheldon Lewis, was struck down by a car and then pinned underneath of it. He was dragged for about five seconds before the operator was able to get back to the station and turn the ride off. Jonas and a few other guys ran up there to try to help free the little boy, but the ride wouldn't budge and there was only about six inches between the platform and the car, where the little boy was pinned between. The fire department and police department responded, and got the "jaws of life" out to cut away at the car and platform to free Sheldon. It took about thirty minutes before they were finally able to get him free. He was unconscious and not breathing at that time, and was rushed to LSU Hospital.

Sheldon is in critical condition at the hospital now, fighting for his life. You can read the full story here. Please keep him and his family, as well as everybody else involved, in your prayers!
